Katmai National Park and Preserve - Alaska

The original objective of this park, located on the Pacific Ocean side of the remote Alaskan Peninsula, was to protect the lands surrounding the huge volcanic eruption of Novarupta, which formed what is known as the large Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.  The park includes nearly 20 volcanoes, many of which have been active since 1900.  More recently, the park is known for its population of grizzly bears which feed on abundant salmon at Brooks Camp and for the long prehistoric human habitation of the area.  The park includes only five miles of maintained trails, but its extensive wilderness offers many opportunities for adventure and solitude, although hiking and backpacking here can be challenging.
