Lake Clark National Park and Preserve - Alaska
This park of 4 million acres is about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, but it seems much farther as it can only be reached by small plane or boat. The park includes an especially wide variety of landscapes, including its namesake lake and other lakes and streams, coastal rainforests, high mountains, alpine tundra, glaciers, and two major volcanos. Alaskan terrestrial and marine wildlife inhabit the park, and the area supports a rich salmon fishery. There’s a small network of maintained trails in the Port Alsworth area, but hiking in the vast majority of the park requires advanced route-finding capability and associated outdoor skills.
